  • Psych/soc terms

Psych/soc rewards knowing exact terms. Your chapter's terms become cards with their meaning.

  • Concepts, not just words

Basic cards test how things work, like what neurons release at a synapse, which is what science passages ask about.

  • Videos count too

Paste a content-review video with captions. Each card links to the second it was said.

  • Fewer, better cards

Pick Fewer, Normal or More. Leave out definitions you already know with one switch.

Example MCAT Anki cards

  • Basic

Which brain region powers thinking, planning, problem solving, decision making, and self-control over impulses?

    The prefrontal cortex

The prefrontal cortex powers the ability to think, plan, solve problems, make decisions, and exert self-control over impulses.

  • Basic

According to current scientific thinking, what is dopamine's main role in drug use?

Reinforcement — getting us to repeat pleasurable activities

scientists now think dopamine has more to do with getting us to repeat pleasurable activities (reinforcement) than with producing pleasure directly.

  • Cloze

A burst of dopamine signals that something important is happening that needs to be remembered, leading to habit formation.

a burst of dopamine signals that something important is happening that needs to be remembered. This dopamine signal causes changes in neural connectivity that make it easier to repeat the activity again and again without thinking about it, leading to the formation of habits.

How to use Anki for the MCAT

Anki covers the memory side of the MCAT. Practice passages cover the rest.

A premade deck or your own?

Cards from your own prep book match its wording, and you can add what you miss in practice.

What to put in Anki

Amino acids, equations, hormones and psych/soc terms. Not CARS: it tests reasoning, not memory.

Settings that work

Turn on FSRS in Deck options and keep desired retention at 90%, Anki's default. Keep learning steps short, such as 10m. Stop new cards a few weeks before test day.

A study-week routine

Review daily. Finish a chapter, upload it, add the cards. Turn missed practice questions into cards.

When you fall behind

Pause new cards until your daily reviews are manageable, as Anki's manual recommends, and clear the overdue ones a few hundred a day.

Free to start. Pro when you study every day.

Free is enough to try it on a few lectures. Pro covers one or two classes every week, Max every class.

Questions

Should I use a premade MCAT deck or make my own?

Premade decks cover common content. Cards from the book you're actually studying match its wording and order, and you can add the facts you got wrong in practice.

What if a card is wrong?

Each card shows the exact quote and page it came from, and a card is only kept if that quote is really in your file. You can still edit, redo or delete any card on the Review screen before you download.

Can it make cards from Khan Academy or other videos?

Yes, from YouTube videos with captions. Each card links to the second in the video where it was said.

Does it work with Anki on my phone?

Yes. You download a normal .apkg deck. It opens in Anki on a computer, AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid, with no add-ons. Image occlusion cards need Anki 23.10 or newer.

Is it free?

Yes. Free makes 3 decks a month from files up to 15 pages. Pro ($7.99 a month) makes 50 decks a month from files up to 100 pages. Downloading to Anki is never paywalled.
